Treasury Foundations

The basics in Central Netherlands not far from Amsterdam

Introduction

Training Treasury Foundations is a basic course that includes all the important operational elements of treasury and finance. The course is focused on the (future) treasury employee or treasury assistant who need practical knowledge about treasury and finance as well as the staff member involved in treasury and finance aspects from another department. The training may also be of interest to back office employees.

Contents

The contents are organized in five main blocks, and include some additional presentations and an introduction to treasury organization and control to get a full overview of the discipline. Where relevant, attention is given to the credit crisis, discussions of the Basel Committee, reporting issues and other current developments. Numerous practical exercises are carried out in the classroom.

Financial Markets

The functioning of the European financial markets is discussed, including several products to attract and invest liquidity.

Interest rate instruments

 The instructor provides an overview of the main interest rate instruments, including forward rate agreements and interest rate swaps. In this block, attention is also given to the interest rate forecast and the yield curve. To get the most out of this section, a lot of exercises are conducted in the classroom.

Foreign exchange instruments and options

Attendees are presented with an overview of the main foreign exchange instruments, including FX swaps and currency swaps. In addition, an introduction to options is given, including the underlying theory (without going into mathematical details). Finally, certain structured products are discussed.

Market value, reporting and risk management

The main risk management techniques are discussed for interest rate and foreign exchange positions. A summary is provided of the relevant reporting aspects (IFRS) and the impact of accounting procedures on the company’s risk management strategy.

Cash management

An overview of the most important cash management techniques is given. The main topics are the infrastructure of bank accounts, including cash pooling structures, working capital management and payments, including SEPA developments.

Entry requirements

There are no special entry requirements, although some quantitative insight and relevant experience may be helpful.

Examination

There is no organized exam. However, upon request Riskmatrix can offer an individual on-line exam after the course which, if passed, results in a RISKMATRIX diploma. Participants who attend and actively participate in all sessions will receive a certificate of participation.

Course structure and program

Courses are held in a three-day program format until 5 p.m. All the main topics described above will be discussed in successive blocks of three to four hours. As a result, each course is intensive and allows a lot of scope for exercises and discussion. 

Full documentation

The course is fully documented. In addition to a textbook, participants receive other materials including copies of the sheets discussed.

Tutors

Tutors are professionals who combine real experience in the financial world with experience in training or consulting. Tutors come from leading financial institutions and consulting firms, or have jobs in the corporate treasury sector.

Course venue: The Horst Estate in Driebergen, the Netherlands. This location is only one hour from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) or Rotterdam Airport by train or car. For international participants, travel arrangements can be organized. The total course fee including documentation, luncheons and refreshments during the course is € 2,200 (excl VAT). If desired, RISKMATRIX can book a hotel arrangement at or near the training venue. Depending on the location, the price for a single room is approximately € 130 – € 160 (excl VAT) per night including dinner and breakfast. Other room rates can be quoted on request.
